Welcome to Belyaev (pronounced Belly eye av) Rats.
The name of our rattery, Belyaev Rats reflects our primary aims and purpose of breeding rats not as perfect show specimens but based primarly on health and temperament.
Dmitri Belyaev was a soviet scientist who realised that with selective breeding it was possible to domesticate wild animals with a preference for a more docile and “human-loving” animal. There are more links regarding Dmitri Belyaev and his ground-breaking discoveries on our links page.
Of course, we are not scientists, but only select rats with favourable temperaments and proven healthy lines. We won't always be breeding for specific colours but more often than not we will have some truly wonderful colours. You can be sure that any rats you are lucky enough to get from us will be handled from the day they were born and that we will keep in touch with you throughout the life of your rat.
Our first 2 litters were born on the 31st July 2007.
We keep our rats on "Back to Nature" litter and they are fed on our own rat mix based on the nutritional requirements found as part of the Shunamite diet.
